Marmor als Kaminbau-Material - Entstehung und Gewinnung

Marble - one of the most beautiful kinds of natural rock which exist

The origin of marble is millions of years in the past. The basic component of marble is deposits containing lime from the primeval oceans, which moved to the interior of the earth in tectonic displacements and crystallised there as a result of the enormous pressure and the high temperatures in the course of the millions of years.

Unique in its structure

The various structures, colours, veins and inclusions of each individual marble are caused by a variety of further minerals also involved in the origination process (e.g. graphite or metal oxides). Pure marble is normally white and relatively rare. Each block of marble obtained directly from a rock is unique, its appearance and structure not existing anywhere else in the world. Marble has been obtained in giant quarries for more than 2,000 years now.  In former times, the marble was obtained in hard manual work.

Modern Machinery

For example, 20,000 people worked in one marble quarry in ancient times. Nowadays, modern engineering makes working much easier. Large machines with diamond ropes cut blocks up to 12 tons in weight out of the mountains in only a few hours.

Marble - material of kings

The amount mined has been greatly increased by the fact that more marble has been mined in the past 2 decades than in all the centuries before. In this way, this noble material, which mainly used to be reserved for kings and princes, has become affordable for everyone nowadays. After the transport of the blocks weighing tons to the production factory, the rock is sawn into plates using computer-supported sawing machines.

Timeless Beauty

After this, the marble plates are given their first grinding. There is either fine polishing with quartz sand, pumice and felt, or outlining with hammer and chisel or a bush hammer is used. The fine work at the end is purely manual work. Each decoration, each ornament, each rounding is put into the marble in time-consuming work done by hand. Thanks to its natural elegance, its beautiful colour variations and its outstanding processing properties, marble is particularly well suited for exclusive interior decorating and can be used in a practically infinite variety of shapes and combinations. Be it as a fireplace covering, as a sophisticated bathroom design or a floor covering - the natural rock material marble is always of timeless beauty and a decision to buy it made today does not lost its topicality even in years to come.
